According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), you always need to have received some type of post secondary education or an associate's degree in chemistry to enter the field of chemistry, but to actually work in the field of chemistry, one needs at least a bachelor's degree. For a very advanced career in chemistry, you need a masters or doctorate degree. A two year associates program includes introductory courses in mathematics, physics, and chemistry. Students usually do some hands on work in a lab with basic lab procedures, and students analyze chemical compounds, learn how to use equipment, and study theories. Graduates of this level can work as lab assistants and chemical technicians. To get an advanced level education for chemistry, students must complete an independent study and research project on a chemistry-related topic. Students may also be needed to complete a thesis or dissertation, which may need to be defended in the form of an oral exam in front of a panel of professors. If a person gets a degree at this level, he/she would probably be able to do any type of work in the field of chemistry.
